Simple Commitment

Desired outcomes do not happen without commitment. Ever.

“Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness. Concerning all acts of initiative (and creation), there is one elemental truth that ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans: that the moment that one definitely commits oneself, then Providence moves too. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one’s favor all manner of unforeseen incidents, meetings and material assistance, which no man could have dreamt would have come his way. I learned a deep respect for one of Goethe’s couplets:

‘Whatever you can do or dream you can, begin it.

Boldness has genius, power and magic in it!’ ”

That wordy quotation from William Hutchinson Murray’s book, The Scottish Himalayan Expedition (Murray is the young man on the right in this picture from his early climbing days) is often misattributed to the German writer and philosopher Goethe. I find it helps clients to understand the magic of a commitment.Scottish Mountianeering Club - WHMurray far right.jpg

Several simple truths about commitment can be found that quotation:

Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness.

Hesitancy is not commitment. When you hesitate, others watch you, often in internal pain, because they want you either to commit or not commit. When you are on the fence, others who depend on your decision cannot take action. Opportunities pass by unclaimed. Organizations become ineffective when leaders fail to commit.

Concerning all acts of initiative (and creation),

Action is the result of making a commitment. Hell, commitment itself is an action! Creation is an action. Creative initiative is what drives artists, writers, actors, and leaders.

there is one elemental truth

What is an elemental truth? Break it down further. Elemental means basic and important, having the power of a force of nature. So, an elemental truth is so basic and important a truth that it has the power of a force of nature. A truth so important that it has the strength of a tornado.

that ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans:

If you are ignorant of this tornado of truth, all your splendid plans and ideas will die an ignoble death.

the moment that one definitely commits oneself, then Providence moves too.

What is Providence? We are not talking about the Capital of Rhode Island. We are talking about divine guidance and care; about God conceived as the power sustaining and guiding human destiny. Providence is powerful stuff, Elemental in nature, like destiny.

The moment you make a definite commitment, divine power lights the lamp of guidance, providing support for your destiny.

A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one’s favor all manner of unforeseen incidents, meetings, and material assistance, which no man could have dreamt would have come his way.

From the moment you make that decisive commitment, doors open, and people become interested, committing money, time, and effort to support your chosen course of action. These people come out of the woodwork, and the money comes from sources you would not have thought of. You get support from the most unexpected places, and it all appears like magic; to many it looks like luck.

Whatever you can do or dream you can, begin it.

Take that first step. Start now.

Boldness has genius, power and magic in it!

Fortune favors the bold. The man who moves boldly, who makes decisions about what he is going to do and how he is going to do it, appears to hold magical powers and the genius of decision.

Deciding what your desired outcome is going to be is making a commitment. Unless you make that commitment with the fire of integrity, you will fail. It couldn’t be any more simple. Fail to commit, and you fail from the start.
